Awqaf SA on ITV Pledgeline

Dear Brother/ Sister

Assalamualaykum / Peace be Upon You.

From all of us here at Awqaf SA, we wish you Ramadaan Kareem and Mubarak, and the very best this month for you and your family. We humbly ask you to take a moment over this most sacred time to think of those less fortunate. With your assistance, you can help us at Awqaf SA to make a positive change. Since our humble beginnings in 2001, Awqaf SA has continuously supported worthwhile community projects, investing over R6 million on projects and grants that uplift our communities and our nation. With your help, we are poised to grow and continue inshallah with this most precious work. Alhamdulillah.

What do we stand for?

A Waqf (pl: awqaf) is a voluntary charitable legacy, or “Sadaqah Jariyyah” (perpetual charity), for the pleasure of Allah. The Donation that you make is invested and helps provide an income stream that is used for Awqaf SA’s projects and grants for individuals, organisations and institutions. Our grants and funding go towards the poor and needy, for poverty alleviation, humanitarian aid, and community development projects. We target areas of improvements in Education, Health Care, Social Upliftment, Social Aid, Skills and Enterprise Development, Arts and Culture, Masjid & Islamic Centre building & improvement, and protection of the Environment.

We support a holistic range of projects on an ongoing basis. Our current flagship projects include:

The DaruShifa Elders facilities – Land has already been acquired in Lenasia and Raslouw, and we are now in the planning stages of the development.

Matric Mathematics Upgrade – This is an exciting, high-impact project to ensure our youth are adequately skilled in Mathematics, an area of education that is currently lacking. This project is in collaboration with K-WAY, SciBono (Gauteng Education Department) and ITV, and is set for launch in July 2015.

Boland Islamic Council (Western Cape) – A community development initiative where we work hand-in-hand with 18 towns to uplift the communities.

Masjid Renovation Projects – We are collaborating with Voice of the Cape and SANZAF) to renovate 21 Masjids in the Western Cape, so that we may nurture our Islamic communities of the Western Cape.

This Ramadaan, and going forward, let us revisit, re-think, and revert to a culture of voluntary donating of lillah and sadaqa to waqf sadaqah jariyyah.

Why?

Because Waqf or Sadaqah Jariyyah is the most enduring and sustainable voluntary Islamic Charity, initiated and implemented by our Noble Prophet Muhammad. It is a sustainable system that empowers the ummah and communities. We need to revive this sunnah and our lost heritage.

Any donation yields great reward! Consider the impact of a R1000 waqf donated investment today. It will profit R1002 (at a yield of 7.25% pa) over 10 years. This amount can be spent on projects and grants. By then, the initial Waqf will have doubled in capital value over that time to R2014 (at a capital growth of 7% pa) with a total of R3016 combined. The picture is even more startling over 50 years!

Graph R1000 Investment

Our current investments and commitments include a R4m grant for a Shopping Centre in KZN called Bridge City (under construction). We have also invested R12.5m towards a factory complex in the Western Cape which profits higher than illustrated above.
