A Cataract Camp Discharge Ceremony took place at the Leratong Hospital, Johannesburg on 22 July 2024. This follows a series of 242 cataract surgeries that took place over the weekend of 20 and 21 July.
Since the inception of this initiative, a total of 11,117 patients have benefited from free cataract operations. This remarkable achievement highlights the ongoing commitment of the participating organizations to address the healthcare needs of underprivileged communities.
The initiative extended beyond Leratong Hospital, encompassing several other healthcare facilities including St. John Eye Clinic, Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital, Sebokeng Hospital, Pholosong Hospital, and Tembisa Hospital.
The initiative aims to address one of the leading causes of blindness in South Africa—cataracts—by providing free surgeries to those in need. This year’s event was a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to combat preventable blindness.
This initiative was made possible through the joint efforts of several organizations, including Awqaf SA, the Islamic Medical Association of South Africa (IMASA), the Caring Women Forum, the Haroon Tayob Family, Bliss Chemicals, Helping Hand for Relief and Development (HHRD), Sultan Bahu Centre, and HBZ Bank.
