IPSA launches “Gap Year” Enrichment Programme

The Enrichment Programme has been designed for matriculants wishing to pursue an Islamic studies course prior to pursuing studies at university or technikon.
The course will also teach students vital transferable skills which will assist them in job-finding.
Many matriculants use this one year programme as a ‘bridging course’ that allows them to:

Arabic
This is a basic Arabic course for beginners. It enhances a student’s Arabic communication skills in everyday life situations and different social gatherings. Through this course, a student is able to communicate in Arabic on an elementary level with Arabic speaking peoples locally or when travelling to Arabic countries. Lots of emphasis on vocab.

Qur’anic reading
This course instructs the student on how to recite the Qur’an properly by applying the correct tajwidrules. Students who are unable to recite will be taught the correct pronunciation of each letter of the Arabic alphabet (makharij). To goal is to make the student develop confidence in his/her recitation of the Qur’an, thereby enabling them to recite it often, and with love.

Devotional Arabic
This course trains students on how to make supplications (duas) in Arabic for different social gathering e.g. at weddings, engagements, name-givings, dhikrs, janazahs, Mosques etc, with proper pronunciation and comprehension of meanings. A must for all

Ulum al-Qur’an
Enjoy understanding the various sciences of Qur’an with us. The aim of this course is to assist the student towards a better understanding of the Qur’anic message by providing information on its settings, frameworks and circumstances. This course entails a thorough study of the compilation, style and language of the Qur’an. Amongst other disciplines, we will also take you on a journey to the occasions and places of revelation, various categories of Tafsir, Abrogated and abrogating verses of the Qur’an, miracles of the Qur’an as well as Science and the Qur’an.

Meanings of the Qur’an
This course introduces a student to the tafisr (exegesis) of the Qur’an on a basic level. Students will be given a deeper understanding of the basic chapters (Surahs) that are read daily by a Muslim. Through this course, a student enhances his love for the Qur’an. Students will be made to extract from theseSurahs important lessons that are relevant to their daily lives.

Fiqh al-Ibadat
This course is specifically developed to enhance and perfect ones basic acts of worship for the Creator. A student is taught how to perform the primary rituals of worship in Islam such as Salah, Zakah, Sawm and Hajj, in the manner they are supposed to be done. Students will be instructed in a way that will make them understand and appreciate the significance of each Ibadah.

Hadith
The objective of this course is to directly introduce the seeker of knowledge to the treasures of wisdom inherent in the Ahadīth of the Prophet (SAW) and to demonstrate the relevance of these Prophetic guidelines in our lives today. For this we will be studying the renowned 40 Ahadith of Imam al-Nawawi. These Ahadith cover the various essential aspects of the Islamic Way of life, as meticulously compiled by the great Imam al-Nawawi. Student will read the Arabic text and then discuss and study the actual words of the Prophet (SAW).

Sirat al-Nabi
Become acquainted with the inspiring life and teachings of the greatest teacher and mentor, the Prophet Muhammad (SAW)! The course attempts to guide one in understanding the mission and vision of the Prophet (SAW) and accept him convincingly as the role model in our everyday life. In this regard the history as well as biography of the life of the Prophet (SAW) will be made relevant to our daily life by looking at related historical lessons (“making history meaningful”) and spiritual meanings. For purposes of distinction, the life of the Prophet (SAW) has been divided into two parts (corresponding with the two academic semesters) i.e. The Prophet (SAW) in Makkah, and The Prophet (SAW) in Madinah.

Aqidah
This course introduces the students to the fundamentals issues and concepts in our Aqidah (belief system) such as: Where do we get our Aqidah from?, The Existence of Allah, The Attributes of Allah, Divine Destiny, Prophethood and what it entails, The reality Angels and their functions, The Books ofAllah and the proper approach regarding them, The Stages of the Hereafter, Understanding Life in the Grave, The Day of Judgment and its Happenings, The Sahabah and Ahl-al-Bayt and the Correct Beliefs regarding them, The Awliya-Allah and their status, and finally, Understanding how the different Sects came into being and the Uniqueness’ of the Ahl al-Sunnah wa ’l-Jama’ah as the Moderate Mainstream Way of the Majority. While the student comprehends the deeper points of our cherished Aqidah, the subject is also made relevant to our era and its challenges.

The Academic Skills Development Programme
This course enables a student to develop in basic academic skills in the fields of:

  1. Language
  2. Listening
  3. Critical thinking and reading
  4. Speaking
  5. Presenting
  6. Studying
  7. Research
  8. Writing

The objective of this is to prepare the student for attending higher tertiary institutions after completing their gap year. The course will also teach students vital transferable skills which will assist them in job-finding. Most jobs today require one to present written reports and assessments, and to demonstrate that you have understood what you read, heard or encountered via work experience.
