Theme: FOOD SECURITY IN SOUTH AFRICA AND THE AFRICAN CONTINENT AGAINST THE BACKGROUND OF GEO-POLITICAL, CLIMATE CHANGE, AND ECONOMIC CHALLENGES.
Food Security exists ‘when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.’
Bearing these points in mind and when evaluating the South African situation, the record reveals that almost 12 million South African citizens are food insecure; and in addition, some 43% of able-bodied South Africans are unemployed. These facts point out that ‘food security’ is an issue of critical concern within the current context that has been and is being challenged by, among others, geo-political tensions, climate change, and economic uncertainties.
As these challenges intensify, addressing ‘food security’ becomes paramount to safeguarding the well-being and stability of nations and populations. This one-day Food Security Conference aims to bring together stakeholders from various sectors (a) to foster close collaboration and (b) to devise sustainable strategies; these efforts are mainly to combat food insecurity in South Africa, in particular, and the African Continent, in general. This will be in collaboration with the Islamic Organization of Food Security (IOFS) and a few other international stakeholders.
IOFS and the series of Food Security Conferences, Seminars, and Workshops play pivotal roles in fostering dialogue, collaboration, and action to address food insecurity. By working together, the global community and various stakeholders can build resilient, sustainable, and equitable food systems that safeguard the well-being of present and future generations.
