Cape Town hosts Waqf Cadre Training

As part of the outcome of the recently signed MOU between Awqaf SA and the Boland Islamic Council, a special Waqf Cadre Training workshop will be conducted on the subject of Awqaf and how it relates and contributes to meaningful and sustainable community development. Awqaf SA Present at Academic Recognition Awards

  Awqaf SA was invited by Grassy Park High School to attend their academic awards recognition programme. Awqaf SA sponsored part of the programme and was afforded the opportunity to address the school. Deputy CEO of Awqaf SA, Mickaeel Collier, addressed the learners on the importance of the contribution the Youth have in acquiring knowledge in order to provide positively to the growth and development of South Africa. He quoted the philosopher Al Ghazaali who said, “knowledge that is not put in to use is but monumental wastage.” Grassy Park High School is situated in a lower middle income area that borders sub economic areas so the school caters for an array of learners with some great challenges. The Principal of the School Mrs. Woolward said, “…that the school staff and parent body are committed to bringing back excellence to Grassy Park High and wishes to thank Awqaf SA for assisting us with this objective.” Learners were issued with Academic, Cultural and TurnAround awards of recognition across the grades. SA National Qiraa’ah Competition Opens

In 2015, for the second consecutive year, the South African Qur’aan Union (SAQU) has teamed up with AWQAF SA to host the Gauteng Chapter of the competition Entries are now open for the Gauteng Chapter of the South African National Qiraa’atul Qur’aan Competition The South Africa Qur’aan Union (SAQU) has hosted a national Qiraa’ah (Qur’aan recital) competition in Cape Town for the last decade. The mother city is set to once again host this year’s event which will see the biggest gathering of Qur’aan reciters of its kind in the country. The event is recognised worldwide and is administered according to the international standards. This landmark initiative is an attempt to honour the efforts of students and teachers of the Holy Qur’aan throughout the world. It serves as an added encouragement for individuals to improve, and hence the aim of the competition is to promote and maintain high levels of Qur’anic learning and service, as well as to train and earmark successful (local) candidates for other international platforms. In 2015, for the second consecutive year, the South African Qur’aan Union (SAQU) has teamed up with AWQAF SA to host the Gauteng Chapter of the competition. The Gauteng Chapter is open to participants from the Gauteng, North West, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape provinces. A Kwa-Zulu Natal regional leg is also included in the overall competition. GIFT OF SIGHT FOR 50 PATIENTS

A special cataract camp sponsored by the National Awqaf Foundation of South Africa (AWQAF SA) in partnership with the Islamic Medical Association of South Africa (IMASA) and the Gauteng Department of Health in a Public Private Partnership is to be held on the 11, 12th April 2015 at the Leratong Hospital, Krugersdorp. A team of two surgeons and fifteen support staff operating in two theatres will, with the Grace of the Almighty, perform approximately 50 operations. These operations will be performed free of charge to all patients. (A cataract operation can cost up to R15000.) With the help and Mercy of Almighty God a total of 3238 Cataract Operations have been performed since beginning of the project from April 2005 to date. We are very grateful to AWQAF SA for their sponsorship of the cataract project since 2005. We are planning to expand the project to some other hospitals with their kind help. –     Dr Shabbir Hussain, Chief Opthalmologist of the project Cataracts are generally simple to diagnose and the surgery is considered to be a straightforward, quick procedure with few complications. However despite this, the major cause of blindness worldwide is due to cataracts. In keeping with the global initiative of Vision 2020 – the right to sight. Awqaf SA – Boland Islamic Council sign MOU

ALHAMDULLILAH Awqaf SA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Boland Islamic Council (BIC) which represents all the outlying town’s of Cape Town. In the MOU the two organisations agreed to cooperate on joint projects. The establishment of a waqf fund in the name of BIC to which Awqaf SA handed over a cheque of R100 000 towards the establishment of the Boland Islamic Council Waqf Fund. Mickaeel Collier, Deputy CEO of Awqaf SA said: “The BIC will promote Awqaf SA as part of a road show to all the towns of the Boland.” The MOU was signed at the historic site of the Faure Karamat where Shaykh Yusuf lies buried, and at the site where the first muslim community in South Africa was formed. The MOU was signed in front of thousands of people and broadcast live on radio voice of the Cape. Br Mickaeel beseeches Allah to allow this cooperation to grow from strength to strength insha’Allah and asks all concerned to make dua for success.
