Waqf Airline Launched

WAQF being among one of the religious endowment in Islam, has existed since the days of Prophet Muhammad SAW. It acts as an economic catalyst and a social welfare instrument for the development of Islamic civilization. It is heralded as one of the pillars of success in the Islamic social security system, in addition to zakat, sadaqah, and others. There is a compelling need to take new approaches to ensure that the waqf mechanics be propagated to serve the needs of today’s society in view of the current landscape. Moreover, the role of waqf is not only confined to satisfy the spiritual needs in serving The Creator Allah SWT, but also to bring about the social and economic impact to Muslims at large. Today, the Selangor Waqf Corporation has realized an approach to further elevate the reputation of waqf globally. Waqf Airlines was introduced to facilitate Muslims to perform their umrah or hajj. The global rise in cost of fuel, lodging and travel documents has contributed to the overall rise in cost of travel to perform umrah and hajj; thus the need to ease this financial burden exists. In addressing the above, Selangor Waqf Corporation in collaboration with Air Riths Sdn Bhd (ARSB) founded Waqf Airlines in 2014. W I E F – IDB Awqaf Roundtable

REDISCOVERING AWQAF AND ITS ECONOMIC POTENTIAL Jakarta, 5 June 2014 – The World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) Foundation, in collaboration with the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Group, hosted the WIEF-IDB Awqaf Roundtable today. Themed “Beyond Charity: Harnessing Awqaf for Economic Prosperity”, the Roundtable is conceptualised to promote the untapped opportunities of awqaf in boosting a country’s economic and the well-being of its citizens. Supported by governments, financial organisations and NGOs from Malaysia, Indonesia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore and South Africa, the Roundtable is aimed at shifting mind-set and encouraging the adoption of awqaf as part of a country’s social and economic plan. The Hon. Tun Musa Hitam, Chairman of the WIEF Foundation, said at the opening session, “WIEF believes in building bridges that concern both Muslim and the non-Muslim world through business.
