Awqaf SA: Proud Sponsor of 1st Solar Powered Computer Lab

Solar Powered Learning is a low cost, energy efficient and sustainable solution to giving underprivileged learners in rural areas access to educational resources through technology. We are living in a world where the entry level of literacy is computer literacy. If one wants to obtain a decent living, one needs to be technologically savvy. South Africa’s polarised society has one side of the population up to date with the latest technology and trends, whereas the majority is still left uneducated, impoverished and jobless. Rural schools lack access to proper education and electricity. With these circumstances, it is difficult to empower themselves to become contributors to society as they lack the adequate skills and resources.

Awqaf SA has joined United Twenty 13 and its team of  dedicated volunteers in supporting and co -funding the 1st Solarpowered Computer Lab in a deserving school in Cosmo City, near Johannesburg. “We want to build a low-cost, energy efficient Raspberry Pi computer Lab for a school in Cosmo City. We also know that helping just one school isn’t going to change the country, so the most important feature of our design is Scalability. This means that anyone, anywhere will be able to build the same computer lab for the same cost. This means a standard model, and while there are many cheap computers out there, we’ve chosen the Raspberry Pi” United Twenty 13 is a collective, whose mission is to harness sustainable developmental change through youth driven initiatives.  Their vision is to achieve long-term sustainable change in the City of Johannesburg and beyond. United Twenty-13 is formed by 10 ambassadors from the One Young World 2013 Summit. The 10 young leaders were selected to be part of the City of Johannesburg Mayoral Delegation to the summit and decided to form the NPC thereafter. Awqaf SA is a proud sponsor and thanks all our donors and well wishers that enable the institution of Waqf to provide sustainable solutions and helping uplift and empowering communities through its strategic donations and support to projects that will hopefully transform lives, families, and communities. We also thank Taskeen Adam and her team for giving Awqaf SA the opportunity to partner in this worthwhile project.
